Oregon State Grange Convention Session 137 Margaret, Bernie and I arrived in Roseburg Oregon on Sunday June 19th at about 2 pm. After securing the RV we went to the convention center to leave off our exhibits and to register. We did well with our exhibits. We got 2 blue, 4 reds and 2 white ribbons.
Monday Morning we went to the convention center for the opening of The State Grange. What an enlightenment experience if you have never seen the State Grange open in the sixth degree. Last year was our first year at the convention and we were only fifth degree, so we weren’t allowed on the floor for the opening of the Grange. Last year before leaving The Convention Margaret and I received the sixth degree which allowed us in the opening of The State Grange this year. After being opened in the Sixth degree The Grange was put in the fourth degree buy The Worthy Master Phyllis Wilson so the work of the Grange could be done.
In our packets we received were our assignments for which resolution committee we would serve on. I was placed on the By-Laws committee. We had 4 resolutions on changing the voting system for the State Officers which only one made it through committee and it failed on the floor. We had a resolution on raising dues to the State from $30 to $40 and $60 to $80 for families. We could not get a clear up or down, so it was sent to the floor with no recommendation. After much discussion by the delegates on the floor from the Granges present, the dues increase was passed. Our Grange (Beaver Homes) advised us to vote against the increase as they felt it would hurt our membership which is currently 56 and reduce our ability to get new members. Beaver Homes Grange is in Columbia County which has an unemployment rate of near 25% and isn’t getting any better at this time. We will have to come up with a solution by the end of the year.
There will be a State packet left on our exhibit table down stairs for everyone to look at.
All in all, the convention was a great experience and a lot of fun. We made new friends from around the State which we hope to see next year. Margaret and I were assigned to our first committee this year. We had 62 resolutions from around the State to go through on the floor after going through committee.
The State Grange Convention is at Corvallis Oregon next year I would encourage everyone to go if it is only for a day to get a view of the hard work that is done.
Some high points for me was the floor by The Youth And Junior groups and The Installation Group that installed our State Officers for their next term.

Hello all fellow Grange Members:
The Junior Granges did a wonderful job on their marching, things they do for their respective granges and others. They also did a wonderful job of the Installation of the State Officers. I didn’t realize that there was even a Jr. Grange for those under 14 years of age. The kids sure seem dedicated and knowledgeable. We need to recruit members with children and have them join. This would give the kids something worthwhile to do.
Nest year we hope to have more members join us at Corvallis, it is much closer. In the year 2012 the convention will be in Seaside, Oregon which is even closer. We will be involved in helping run that convention. Will let everyone know about plans for this later. In 2012, the National Grange convention will be in Boise, Idaho. You can get your 7th degree there only. Also, at state they do the 5th and 6th degrees for anyone that wishes to receive. Thank you for helping us participate. Your fellow sister member Margaret Brady |
